Ive said it before, and Ill say it again: I love the beach. Give me an ocean-front plot of sand, a blanket to lay on, and a bottle of sunscreen, and Im good to go for hoursno horseshoe or bocce ball sets needed. The attractions are too numerous to list here, but its mostly the big threesun, surf, and scentthat compels me to board planes and brave the weekend traffic on the Garden State Expressway. The aroma of sun-kissed salt water is particularly intoxicatingand equally difficult to duplicate, which is why you typically need to be ankle deep in sand in order to get a real whiff of beach. Cartiers latest fragrance manages to capture the nuance, albeit unintentionally. Baiser Vol, in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurents ode to the lily, just hit shelves at Nordstrom and is meant to incorporate every component of the flower into one bottle, blending the freshness of its leaves with the powdery richness of its pistils and petals. While the perfume is intended to be a fall fragrance, its lasting impression is somehow beachynot in the Banana Boat sense of the word, but insofar as it captures the otherwise elusive eau of sweet salinity.
